Featuring artwork by Dena Gower, this tea towel shares a personal story inspired by the Marlee (Black Swan), a well-known and much-loved bird found along the Derbal Yerrigan (Swan River). Through her artwork, Dena celebrates the wildlife of Noongar Country and the family memories that connect people to place.
The artwork recalls a family picnic by the river when a curious Marlee approached the group. While the other children ran away, Dena's young grandson stood his ground with a small stick in hand, determined to protect his grandmother. The moment remains a cherished memory of courage, love, and family.

Artwork Story
"The black Marlee (Swan) is a very recognisable animal for Boorloo, found on the Derbal Yerrigan (Swan River). It's a cheeky animal that can get quite angry with people. One day we were having a picnic next to the river and a Marlee jumped up on the bank. All the kids screamed and ran away except for my grandson, who picked up a small stick and stood in front of me. He was protecting me, my little warrior."
