Artwork Story
During Tiwi ceremonies, a series of yoi (dances) are performed, many of which tell stories through song and movement. Participants are painted with ceremonial designs known as Jilamara, transforming the dancers and, in some cases, providing protection from mapurtiti (spirits). These important artistic designs are central to Tiwi cultural expression and storytelling.
