Featuring Pikilyi Jukurrpa artwork by an Australian Aboriginal artist, this handcrafted ornament shares the story of Pikilyi, an important natural spring and waterhole located at Mt Doreen Station in the Northern Territory. According to Warlpiri tradition, Pikilyi is home to two Rainbow Serpents, a husband and wife who are the kirda (traditional owners) of this Country.
The story tells of the female Rainbow Serpent belonging to the Napanangka skin group and the male Rainbow Serpent belonging to the Japangardi skin group, a relationship that is considered taboo within Warlpiri culture. Their story remains deeply connected to this significant waterhole and its cultural importance.
Handcrafted from recycled paper and individually hand-painted, each ornament is a unique decorative piece that brings Indigenous Australian storytelling and art into the home.
