Featuring Watiya Tjuta Tree artwork by renowned Aboriginal artist Mitjili, this handcrafted ornament celebrates a significant Tjukurrpa (Dreaming) story from Ilyingaungau Country in the Gibson Desert. The Watiya Tjuta tree is part of Mitjili's father's Dreaming, knowledge that was passed down through generations by her mother, Tjunkayi Napaltjareri, through traditional storytelling and sand drawing practices.
Mitjili's distinctive artistic style reflects these teachings, translating ancient stories and cultural knowledge into a striking visual form. As Mitjili explains, "After I got married, my mother taught me my father's Tjukurrpa in the sand, that's what I'm painting on the canvas".
Handcrafted from recycled paper and individually hand-painted, each ornament is a unique piece that brings Indigenous Australian art and storytelling into the home.
