SPECIES Morpho amathonte
ORIGIN Peru
FRAME 20x20xD5cm Made from recycled products.
DESCRIPTION Iridescent metallic blue colouration with black colouration on apex of top wings. Note colour varies on angle of frame. The genus name Morpho comes from an Ancient Greek epithet, roughly "the shapely one", for Aphrodite, goddess of love and beauty.
Morphos are diurnal, as males spend the mornings patrolling along the courses of forest streams and rivers. They are territorial and chase any rivals. Morphos typically live alone, excluding in the mating season.
The entire lifecycle is around 115 days
Adult morpho butterflies feed on the juices of fermenting fruit
Please note all Morpho butterflies are mounted without abdomen. The abdomen of the Morpho emits a grease like substance which stains the backboard. All professional mounts will not have an abdomen attached.
