Sir George Hubert Wilkins led an extraordinary life as a war photographer, aviator, polar explorer, scientist, and naturalist. Born in rural South Australia in 1888, Wilkins became the first to film combat in war, fly across the Arctic, and pilot a submarine beneath the polar ice. A pioneer in aerial mapping and meteorology, he documented vast unexplored regions of the Arctic and the Antarctic. His relentless pursuit of knowledge and adventure was fueled by a rugged upbringing and insatiable curiosity. This book highlights his remarkable contributions-especially his often-overlooked Antarctic expeditions-and restores Wilkins to his rightful place among the great explorers of the 20th century.
ANNETTE CARTER has over 20 years of experience working in museums and the heritage sector, driven by her passion for social history and storytelling through objects and archives. She holds a Master’s in Museum Studies.
