Joseph Banks was an English naturalist, botanist and patron of the natural sciences. He accompanied Captain Cook on his first voyage round the world from 1768 to 1771 and collected over 1300 species of floras. An illustrator, Sydney Parkinson, drew them life-size and captured them lushly life-like with an artist’s eye and lucid observation.
