After Federation, Canberry, which had been renamed Acton by an absentee English landlord, became the base from which the national capital was built. With extensive grassy patches and pathways, open woodlands and abundant wildlife, it evoked a country estate in England. Bill Gammage has discovered this was because Aboriginal people managed the land in a far more systematic and scientific fashion than we have ever realised.

For over a decade, Gammage has examined written and visual records of the Australian landscape. He has uncovered an extraordinarily complex system of land management using fire and the life cycles of native plants to ensure plentiful wildlife and plant foods throughout the year. We know Aboriginal people spent far less time and effort than Europeans in securing food and shelter, and now we know how they did it.

With details of land-management strategies from around Australia, The Biggest Estate on Earth rewrites the history of this continent, with huge implications for us today. Once Aboriginal people were no longer able to tend their country, it became overgrown and vulnerable to the hugely damaging bushfires we now experience. He remembers spending much of his childhood travelling in the surrounding country of this region. Otto finished high school in Yuendumu and has continued his studies through the indigenous college in Alice Spring where he got a bachelor in Business. He has worked for Yuendumu Council and the Tanami Goldmine in the 1990’s. Otto paints his father’s, Paddy Japaljarri Sims, stories, that were passed down to Paddy by his parents, and their parents before them for millennia. These stories relate directly to Otto’s country at Kunajarrayi and Yanjilpirri, its features and flora and fauna. Otto has painted for Warlukurlangu Artists Aboriginal Corporation, an Aboriginal owned and governed art centre located in Yuendumu, since 1990, and was elected to its executive committee in 2002 and Chairman of the art centre in 2007. In March 2008 Otto travelled to Bahrain for the opening of a Warlukurlangu group exhibition at the La Fontaine Centre of Contemporary Art. This was Otto's first trip overseas. We witness the fear and courage of tens of thousands of soldiers, grapple with the strategic nightmares confronting the commanders, and come to understand the impact on Australians at home, and at the front, of death on an unprecedented scale.

Author: Joan Beaumont
ISBN: 9781760111304
Type: Paperback
Pages: 656
Dimensions: 153mm x 234mm
Publisher: Allen & Unwin
Published Date: September 2014

Based on artwork by Judy Napangardi Watson from Warlukurlangu Artists of Yuendumu, Australia.
Presented in a matching giftbox featuring information about the artist and artwork.

Royalties from this product directly benefit the artist and their community.

Fine Porcelain Sugar Bowl with Bamboo Lid
Includes White Porcelain Spoon.
Packaged in a gift box including information about the artist and artwork.
Dimensions: 8.5cm diameter. This design is taken from an original painting. The country associated with this painting is Mina Mina, a place far west of Yuendumu, significant to Napangardi and Napanangka women who are the custodians of the Dreaming that created the area. The Dreaming describes the journey of a group of women of all ages who travelled east gathering food, collecting Ngalyipi (Tinospora smilacina or snake vine) and performing ceremonies as they travelled. The women began their journey at Mina Mina where karlangu (digging sticks) emerged from the ground. Taking these implements the women travelled east creating Janyinki and other sites. The Women collected Jintiparnta (Elderia arenivaga) - an edible fungus, along the way. Their journey took them eventually beyond Warlpiri country. The Dreaming describes the journey of a group of women of all ages who travelled east gathering food, collecting Ngalyipi (Tinospora smilacina or snake vine) and performing ceremonies as they travelled. This is a very detailed painting which describes a dry time of year in Damien’s homeland, Mount Liebig. The painting illustrates aspects of landscape and culture around that area that was told to Damien by his great-grandmother and great- grandfather. There are women sitting with their children collecting bush potatoes (the mass of red shapes at the bottom of the painting). The women are talking and getting ready for a ceremony. There is one man (wati) sitting down with his waru (spear). The spinifex is dry and so the man is walking around making bushfires. He is a good man, he is undertaking controlled burnings so the spinifex burns up and then good fruits can grow after this. There are several symbols in this painting. The small sun-like symbols represent women’s body painting – these are the images the women are painting on each other as they sit down ready for inma – traditional ceremony. There is a dry creek bed running through the painting (in red and white), and there are cracks in the ground and claypans. There are also dried rockholes (tjukula), and next to them are tali – sandhills.

Size: 400x400mm
Material: Cotton Backing, wool crewel work

This traditional Kashmiri handicraft vitally suppliments an often fluctuating rural income. Nelly is worried for her peoples culture and special ceremonial songs. Nelly tells the story like this. There are many women sitting together, young old and middle age women. All the elders begin singing together and the middle age people join in, singing and dancing. The women begin having a big ceremony. It is very important ceremony for all these women. The elders tell the middle age women not to tell the young people the sacred songs because they are not keeping them secret and safe. Nellie has an intimate knowledge of the Seven Sisters Story – an epic Tjukurpa (creation) story in which a man, Wati Nyiru chases seven sisters across the whole of Australia, shaping the land as they go. The sisters started in Whyalla. Wati Nyiru chased them down to Port Augusta and wouldn’t leave the sisters alone. He wanted to marry the big sister. The sisters left in the middle of the night to try and get away from him while he was sleeping. When Wati Nyiru woke, he wondered where the sisters had gone, but he soon was on their trail again, and found them near Canberra. The eldest sister was worried - she knew he was here again, watching the sisters while they camped. The sisters ran to the Blue Mountains to hide, but Nelly explains that Wati Nyiru was a ‘mad one,’ he knew they were scared but he still followed them. Ten people were in the Blue Mountains, three stayed, and the seven kept traveling – up through New South Wales and to Queensland, going through Cairns and Laura. The Laura mob noticed the seven sisters – they were different people, and sand different songs. The sisters got to Dunsfeld and turned around and went back to near where they were from. They went to Tennant Creek in the Northern Territory, then the sisters traveled around Hermannsburg way. The younger sisters wanted to stay here, but the eldest sister said they had to keep moving. In Tempe Downs, Wati Nyiru got very close to the sisters. The eldest sister was secretly signaling to the sisters that he was nearby, so as to not let Wati Nyiru know she was aware he was there. The sisters ended up in Irawa, and moved through Angas Town, Curtin Springs, Mulga Park and Cape Bell near Amata in the APY Lands. The man, Wati Nyiru, was singing about how much he wanted the big sister. He did too much dancing, that man, and the sisters ran away. He loved all the girls. The girls kept running. This painting depicts some of these places where the sisters camped.

Size: 400x400mm
Material: Cotton Backing, wool crewel work

This traditional Kashmiri handicraft vitally suppliments an often fluctuating rural income.
