Sturt's desert pea is named after inland Australian explorer, Captain Charles Sturt (1795-1869), as well as indicating the plant's desert habitat and membership to the pea family, Fabaceae. It is confined to Australia, where it occurs in all mainland States except Victoria. It is an Australian native flower and was adopted as the floral emblem of South Australia on 23 November 1961. Sturt's desert pea is protected in South Australia. The flowers and plants must not be collected on private land without the written consent of the owner.
