The Queensland bottle tree (Brachychiton rupestris) is native to Australia and is also commonly referred to as a kurrajong tree. The name ‘bottle tree’ refers to the characteristic trunk of the tree, which can reach nearly 9m in diameter (as found in Roma, Queensland). Ripe seed pods will crack open and reveal a cluster of pale yellowish-brown seeds. When collecting the seed it is important to wear gloves as the exterior of the seeds have irritating hairs. The bottle tree is very slow growing; the unique bottle shape taking 5 to 8 years. Trees grown from seed may take up to 20 years to flower.
